With general guidance, supports, coordinates and/or performs activities that evaluate safety of Mary Kay Inc products, ingredients and technologies prior to market launch. Responsible for independently delivering on a range of activities, such as quantitative risk assessment, study design, clinical testing and proficiency in drafting technical reports, summaries, and project management. Has a deepening understanding of toxicology, product safety, cosmetic and personal care products. Communicates effectively with peers, management, external laboratories and consulting partners. Communicates effectively with coworkers in international markets. 


  1. Applies industry safety standard practices, techniques and consistent toxicological concepts and principles to substantiate the safety assessment of cosmetic ingredients, finished products and other items marketed by Mary Kay Inc. Reports project status to supervisor. Proactively seeks consultation with supervisor on non-standard or new technical issues. Expected to recommend/resolve problems of moderate difficulty in their project work.
  2. Designs of in vitro, clinical and in use studies to assess the safety of products and/or ingredients. Compiles data, analyzes and interprets results. Working proficiency in writing and/or reviews reports, effectively communicates study results including oral presentations to other R&D or New Product Development partners. Works independently and be recognized as a consistent technical contributor to influence and impact project decisions
  3. Executes routine tasks/responsibilities, such as scientific & technical ingredient report and executive summary preparation for safety and regulatory support of products. Partners with senior Regulatory Affairs staff to resolve problems in project and initiatives of moderate complexity.
  4. Contracts in vitro safety studies.  Analyzes and interprets results. 

Participates in activities and projects to support overall department/R&D goals, such as continuous improvement projects with moderate complexity. Makes continuous improvement recommendations. Responsible for implementing internal department continuous improvement initiatives. 

  1. Works under general direction on moderately complex specialized projects/initiatives while demonstrating independence in the execution. These projects may support the advancement of novel safety methodologies.


Education:            BS/MSc. with strong preference for PhD in biological sciences, chemistry or toxicology, plus

Experience:         3+ years of toxicology, quantitative risk assessment experience, or other applicable experience with a consumer goods company.

  1. Must have working proficiency in technical writing and communication, including oral presentations and reports. Communicates effectively with peers and management. 
  2. Must be able to manage multiple projects with general guidance from supervisor.
  3. Must have a deepening understanding of toxicology.
  4. Must have ability to apply standard scientific principles and critical thinking to make sound scientific judgments within scope of role.
  5. Demonstrate ability to expand self-leadership to leading larger technical initiatives/teams.
  6. Demonstrate ability to collaborate and build productive partnership with cross-functional teams to accomplish projects specific tasks.
  7. Demonstrate ability to make decisions between multiple alternatives or suggest new options to resolve problems of moderate complexity.
  8. Demonstrate ability to effectively manages work with undefined processes and ambiguity.
